Topic: Outreach

Discussion: How can HABA reach out into our community and get more people involved?

-          Skype will bring in more participants; however it is known that Skype only allows a video conference from three different locations.

-Location is needed to accommodate Skype availabilities, a place with wireless technology

* University of Hawaii options:

-conference rooms available, however, someone needs to be a student and the rooms are on      a first come first serve basis.

-On a positive note, this would initiate a collaboration between HABA and UH

*Masha Crum to check with Argosy on room availability.

*Manoa Innovation Center conference room through Emaley, Janice, or Amy

-Conference room holds about 100 persons

- This location also has workshop rooms. These rooms can be used to host mini workshops to showcase specialties to attract parents, TACA group, students and others.

     -         Department of Education – Getting the word out about HABA, many people miss flyers hanging

on the office walls, so it is more personable to call or email specific persons to invite them to

               HABA meetings.

-          University students

*Todd Addleson and Cathrine Wilson talked to Jenny Wells  (director of the Autism Master’s program at Univeristy of Hawaii) to try to reach out to students in the field.

Conclusion:

The group feels that more people would come if we were to provide more teaching/learning opportunities versus business type meetings. The HABA board members are to meet separately prior to the actual HABA meetings in order to take care of the business matters. In order to appeal to a broader range of audiences, the first 15 minutes, a volunteer will present about a new topic, idea, graphing, data sheet, or intervention that has worked for them. Board members will work on contacting future presenters in order to help promote attendance. Names of speakers that were brought up were Nancy Warren and Cheryl Ebisui. These speakers should present on a specific focus issue or idea. It was also discussed about the possibility of having food at meetings. A second volunteer is to organize either a potluck or arrange a dinner at a specified restaurant for an after meeting get together.

Kelly Stein brought up the question, Can those with BCBA’s and ABA knowledge be bigger than autism and hit a broader range of people with disorders. Kelly went on to explain that CAMD would like to incorporate behavior therapies into their practices. Kelly would like HABA to explain and share about the qualifications needed to become BCBA certified, how to get qualified, and how this qualification can help the population of those with behavior deficits or excesses. Todd added that ABA was not specifically designed only for those with autism spectrum disorder, but to deal with behaviors in general.

Conclusion:

-          Jessie will email contact information to Cher

-          Catherine to send professional emails to Cher

Topic: SBBH interests

Discussion:

Kelly Stein shared what SBBH is interested in learning about.

-          Understanding Behaviors

·         What is the motivation behind behaviors?

·         How do we reinforce behaviors?

·         How do you engage the child?

-          How do you work with teachers/teams?

·         Staffing and teams are not always on the same page

·         Implementation of therapies

-          Truancy has been a big issue dealt with by SBBH staff.

Conclusion:

-          HABA will put together a workshop for SBBH

·         A general workshop on changing behavior

Topic: Video Curriculum/E-training Presentation

Discussion:

Janet Martin and Emaley McCullock presented on a new video curriculum their company has come up with to help train therapist/paraprofessionals.

-          What is it?

·          This is a very extensive video curriculum in the natural environment that showcases different interventions. The video curriculum includes thousands of video clips of student in schools on the leeward coast of Oahu.

·         Training is done completely online. It is like an e-library with books. Each book has different chapters a person can explore and learn more about.

An example given was the topic: Behavior Management. A person can pick one of the chapters in the book behavior management and access chapter modules with video clips. After completing the module compency checks come up to make sure the viewer has been paying attention. A supervisor function is available to see if their employees are accessing the material, and if that person passed or did not pass the quiz at the end.

·         The video curriculum follows the adult learning theory.

-          Why a video curriculum?

·         This curriculum was created due to the fact that it is difficult to train new employees on the basics of behavior therapies when the initial meeting and first few sessions with the child should be about the child.

·         A video curriculum was created because for every person trained in ABA there are 137 people diagnosed with Autism.

Conclusion:  A free trial is available through Janet or Emaley to see what the program is about.

Next HABA meeting:
