Welcome to new members: Amy Wiech, Alison Moors, and Michael Fabrizio

 

 

1)     Welcome and Introduction – Dr. Kimberly Smalley, President

 

2)     Member Business

a)     Trainings/Workshops: One day training in March (date to be selected). Still looking for members to provide a portion of the training on this day. Please contact Dr. Smalley (smalleyk001@hawaii.rr.com) as she needs to have the individuals and course reviewed to provide CEU’s for Board Certification.

b)     Kapiolani Community College Class: Dr. Smalley and Catherine Wilson are offering an undergraduate course appropriate for paraprofessionals in the educating of children with autism at KCC next semester.  The Department of Education is currently providing tuition reimbursement for students who wish to attend.

c)      Officer Elections: during the next meeting nominations for officers (President, Secretary, and Treasurer) will occur.  Per our bylaws the nominations and elections can occur during the same meeting.  If the officers choose an alternative voting format you will be informed via email after the February 2005 meeting.

 

3)     Guest Presentation:  Ms. Laura Cooke and Ms. Emaley McCulloch provided a presentation on the new Pacific Autism Center.  The center has an integrated preschool program (ages 3 to 5) to serve individuals with autism and typically developing individuals and a self-contained elementary school to serve individuals with autism. The program is utilizing Center for Autism and Related Disorders for consulting.  There is a commitment to providing ABA programming within the service delivery model. Components of the program discussed:

¨      Individualized programming to meet individual student needs

 

¨      On-site ABA consultation provided by Ms. McCullough

¨      Drama classes

¨      Speech and language pathologist

¨      Occupational therapist

¨      Clinical psychologist

 

¨      Biological clinic staffed by DAN physicians

 

¨      1:1 pull-out instruction

 

¨      Inclusion opportunities for preschoolers

 

¨      Modified typical classroom for elementary school students to mimic typical school setting

 

¨      Workshop room

 

¨      Privately funded
